Online CNA Training

These days, large numbers of students turn to the Internet for their education. Online CNA training courses are among the most popular, thanks to the high demand for new CNA’s.

Today’s approach offers distance learning with several advantages. However, if you want to fully succeed, it is a good idea to find out how an online CNA training course really works. Because you are not able to visit a campus or school, it is important to do your homework ahead of time and pick a program that is right for you.

Tips to Choosing the Right Online CNA Program
Take advantage of a few common tips that students use to ensure they are making the best choice towards their education.

  1. Identify your future dreams. Ask yourself: what jobs do I want to take on? Where will I work? What requirements are expected by employers looking for CNA’s? In order to choose the best program, you need to know what you need from the CNA classes you are choosing, especially online.
  2. Confirm a school’s accreditation. Regardless of which program you choose, make certain that the school is registered with the National League for Nursing Accreditation Committee or the Committee on Collegiate Nursing and Education. Affiliation with an accredited hospital, nursing facility, or other type of healthcare facility is a great sign as well.
  3. Research your state’s requirements. Picking the right program can be tricky if the school offering it is located in another state. It may not cover all the requirements your home state mandates in order to be certified. Therefore, it is important to research whether the school offers courses required by your state.
  4. Pick the one that best fits your schedule. If you want to be successful in an online class, make sure it offers flexibility that fits your lifestyle or schedule. The more closely it fits to your needs, the more likely you will stay motivated and complete it on time.
  5. Identify how long you plan to be studying. Online CNA classes can last between 6 to 12 weeks in duration.

The Overall Format
Typically, CNA online classes are split into two sections: non-clinical instruction and clinical training, which takes place in a different setting. On-site clinical training is essential because 1) nursing focuses on the medical care and treatment of patients, and 2) healthcare is a highly regulated industry. For these reasons, it is essential that on-site training in a nursing facility be required in order to ensure the highest possible competency within the field.

How Online Classes Work
When you are taking online CNA classes, you will be given a website profile and student site password which is used to access assignments, course materials, grades, resources, and tools. There is also an online forum to facilitate discussions that supplement classroom interaction. You will be required to attend a specific number of days or to submit a specified number of postings each week or during each program, ensuring that you are getting the full benefit of the program.

Your non-clinical instruction materials will include:

  • An e-book from which assignments are based
  • Adobe Acrobat or Office Word worksheets and appendices
  • Access to a threaded online discussion generated to ensure you are covering the basics each week and following the scope of the program

The clinical portion of the online CNA training programs will be much like those that are campus-based. Online training programs have negotiated with nursing facilities to provide you with the opportunity to gain on-site instruction and training. This will give you hands-on experience for what it is like to be a CNA.

While many people find online programs to be a highly convenient and beneficial educational platform, there are still those who are not comfortable with it, and thus require classroom-based instruction to gain a full understanding of the wide range of duties of a CNA.

Pros and Cons of Online CNA Programs

Pros

Cons

  • Easy and instant access to educational resources, tools, tutorials, assignments, and materials anytime you want at your convenience.
  • Simple learning format that offers quick options and simple communication options, as well as a full forum-directed discussion each week.
  • Full student assistance and technical support options.
  • Financial aid accepted at most internet-based accredited CNA schools.
  • The cost of online CNA training courses is between $400 and $1000, with the length of the program much shorter with some online CNA programs.

  • Loss of the hands-on learning approach. However, many students feel the online support system is equally adequate.
  • Loss of the personal feel to education. However, it is often a fair trade for convenient scheduling and 24/7 class access.
  • More self-reliant education that is not regulated highly by the institution. This can be a great fit for those in need of leadership and self-management skills, often sought out by employers today. On the flip side, relying on one’s self to stay motivated can be challenging.
